Late Early

$250.00

2023

Calico, cotton, wool, ink. White frame.

35.5 × 35.5cm

In memory of the dreaded Late Early nursing shifts - walking out at 2200hrs (or later if a chaotic resus came in and handover was impossible until the patient was somewhat stabilised). Aching feet limping to the car several blocks away with the security guard because staff had been robbed in the area recently. Driving home, showering and eating toast over the sink before collapsing into bed. Dragging myself out of bed after 5.5 hours sleep (or later if I sleep through my five alarms) to go back and do it all again at 0700hrs. Back to a bed blocked hospital, last night’s resus patient still awaiting an ICU bed (might be being transferred to city hospital because all other local hospitals are also full), three ambulances ramped (dispatch on the phone wanting an update on when their crews can get back out on the road) and an overflowing waiting room. Oh and two nurses have called in sick.

Typed with vintage typewriter onto vintage calico found in op-shops and second hand craft stores. Calico pieces intuitively sewn into prose patchworks with dyed wool felt pieces hand sewn into place.
